Media ecosystem

Content Development

The development of media content is driven by three key thrusts: the adoption of new media technologies; the move towards multi-platform delivery and spurring co-productions.

Adopting New Media Technologies: New media platforms and digital technologies are quickly embraced. Singapore was not only the first country in Southeast Asia to launch public trials of HD television broadcasts, it is also making progress and delivering content on new platforms like IPTV and Mobile TV.

Move Towards Multi-Platform Content: In order to move up the value chain in media production, Singapore is now turning to producing multi-platform Asian content for international audiences. Initiatives include the recent MOU between Fremantle and MDA to produce original multi-platform content with an Asian flavour for international audiences; and a cross-platform content competition jointly organised by Canal France International and MDA.

Spurring Co-productions: Thanks to a content strategy that encourages co-productions with leading international players, Made-by-Singapore content is entertaining audiences in over 50 countries across the globe. Facilitating the export of content and services into more markets are partnerships with international counterparts.

In addition to existing agreements with Canada, Australia, New Zealand, in 2007, MOUs were signed with Canal France International and the Broadcasting and Communication Commission (BCC) of South Korea.

Media Financing

Singapore has set the pace by being one of Asia’s first country to set up media financing facilities to attract international financiers and investors to set up base in the country.

As of 2008, there have been more than SGD$1 billion worth of media funds available for media projects and companies, injected by banks, financial institutions and strategic investors in Singapore. This has contributed to a healthy business ecosystem that is attracting world-class media projects and talents to Singapore today.

Singapore has set the pace by being one of Asia’s first country to set up media financing facilities to attract international financiers and investors to set up base in the country. The recent anchoring of Hyde Park Asia’s regional base here with a $75 million fund to bankroll films bears testament to the attractiveness of Singapore as a media financing hub.

Another success story has been RGM Holdings partnership with MDA in November 2006 to set up a film fund to finance at least six international films involving Singapore companies, costing a total of S$80 million.

Media Trading

Key to developing as the region’s centre for media exchange, Singapore plays host to events such as BroadcastAsia, which brought together some 760 exhibiting companies from 42 countries.

In November 2008, Singapore played host to the world’s first 3DX: 3D Film & Entertainment Technology Festival, an umbrella of industry forums and film screenings focused on stereoscopic 3-D, underscoring Singapore’s position as a convergence point for global media talents and advancing digital media innovations.

Media Distribution

Media and distribution services are continually being honed to enable the repurposing of media content for international markets.

Singapore media companies like MyChinaChannel are also making waves by partnering Shanghai Media Group’s distribution arm, Wings Media to jointly aggregate the best Chinese Drama and Movies for distribution outside of China.

Such strategic partnerships further strengthens Singapore’s leading position as a secure regional broadcast hub for content transmission to a global audience. We encourage more international broadcasters to use Singapore’s hub status as a gateway to the world

New Asia Media

Market Opportunities

Asia, with its rich cultural diversity and growing affluence, is becoming a major consumer of media content, as well as an increasingly influential content exporter.

The Asia Pacific media market is set to be the fastest-growing region in the next five years (2007-2011).

Global demand for Asia content is also increasing. Fascinated by the spirit, dynamism and confidence of a rising Asia, global audiences are fuelling demand for Asian stories, as evidenced by the recent Korean wave, Hollywood re-telling of Asian stories, as well as numerous international co-productions involving Bollywood, China, Singapore and other Asian media nodes.
