Company Details:
Established in 2004, Blackmagic Design Singapore is one of the world’s leading post-production facilities born out of the conviction that people, ideas and creativity are just as important as great tools.
Part of the internationally renowned post-production equipment manufacturer, Blackmagic Design Inc, it specialises in television commercials, High-Definition documentaries and resolution-independent Digital Intermediate for feature films. The company is Singapore’s only and the region’s most technically advanced Digital Intermediate facility.
The Challenges Faced
The lack of international awareness and confidence, especially from the United States and Europe, with regards to the capabilities of post-production companies in Singapore, was an initial barrier in the company’s efforts to forge international collaborations.
The Support Received:
Blackmagic Design has been able to raise its international profile through MDA’s marketing efforts and matchmaking role.
MDA’s overseas campaigns have actively marketed Singapore-based companies like Blackmagic Design, and promoted their capabilities and services to potential clients and counterparts. As a result, more information has been successfully disseminated and Singapore’s profile as a creative media hub has been significantly raised.
At the same time, MDA has encouraged experienced international companies to enter into co-productions and ventures with Singapore media companies including Blackmagic Design.
MDA also assisted Blackmagic Design’s expansion into feature film post-production by promoting the company at film festivals and industry events throughout Asia and in the USA and Europe.
The Effect
Blackmagic Design has earned a reputation for working in creative partnership with its clients to produce work of an impeccably high standard.
It recently completed a full Digital Intermediate post process for the feature film Dance of the Dragon, where it scanned all 135,000 feet of 35mm rushes at 2K resolution, and performed approximately 300 touch-up/VFX shots and a final 2K in-sequence data grade on its daVinci Resolve 350.
Dance of the Dragon, starring Hollywood’s Jason Scott Lee, Korean actor Jang Hyuk and Singapore’s Fann Wong, won the Best Editing Award at the West Hollywood International Film Festival 2008.
Having a proven post pipeline for international feature films – as well as the huge cost advantage it offers in posting a feature film in Singapore, compared to North America or Europe – has given Blackmagic a competitive edge as it negotiates new feature film deals with filmmakers around the world.
Aside from feature films, Blackmagic Design has also chalked up significant successes with several of its television commercial campaigns and has picked up no fewer than 40 awards in the Phoenix Awards 2008. Its series of HP The Computer is Personal Again television commercials, originally intended for airing only in APAC, were so well received by the HP client in the US that some went international, airing above and below the line in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
