Singapore media firms can look forward to cooperate more closely with counterparts from Sweden, after the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on interactive digital media (IDM).

Singapore’s Media Development Authority (MDA) and Sweden’s Business Region Göteborg, represented by its Center of Visualization, inked the pact on Monday.

The MOU aims to link Singapore and Sweden in the joint development and commercialisation of new digital media technologies, applications, services and content that can address the Singapore, Swedish and global markets.

One example is EON Coliseum. The new technology platform developed by EON Reality’s Singapore office, which allows people to present their ideas, communicate complex concepts and collaborate using rich media objects, will be piloted in Swedish schools.

“Through the MOU, Singapore companies can benefit from Sweden’s experience in innovation. With Singapore’s networks in the region and conducive business environment, we also welcome Swedish media companies to use Singapore as the test-bedding centre and regional launch pad for their business in Asia and beyond,” said Dr Christopher Chia, Chief Executive Officer, MDA.

“By signing this MOU we hope to create a framework that both companies and researchers from Singapore and Sweden can mutually benefit from,” said Eva-Lena Albihn, Deputy Chief Executive, Business Region Göteborg and Chairman of the Center of Visualization.

The MOU with Brunei was signed by His Excellency Haji Awang Alaihuddin Bin Pehin Orang Kaya Di-Gadong Seri Lela Dato Seri Utama Haji Awang Mohamad Taha (front left), Permanent Secretary, Bruneis Ministry of Communications, in his capacity as its Director of Broadcasting, and Dr Tan Chin Nam (front right), Chairman of Singapores Media Development Authority, at the sidelines of BroadcastAsia 2009.

Behind them were The Honourable Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abu Bakar Bin Haji Apong (behind left), Bruneis Minister of Communications and Rear Admiral (NS) Lui Tuck Yew, Singapores Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts (behind right).

Separately, Singapore also signed an MOU with Brunei yesterday, bringing more cooperation between governments as well as private businesses in the new, converged media field. This will enhance a relationship that had begun with an MOU on broadcasting signed in 1990.

Said Dr Tan Chin Nam, Chairman of Singapore’s MDA: “Through this MOU, we hope to put in place a broad framework for our agencies to share ideas and their experiences to meet the challenges of regulating emerging digital platforms and for companies in both countries to collaborate on different facets of the digital media value chain.”

His Excellency Haji Awang Alaihuddin Bin Pehin Orang Kaya Di-Gadong Seri Lela Dato Seri Utama Haji Awang Mohamad Taha, Permanent Secretary, Brunei’s Ministry of Communications, continued: “We see this as a strategic partnership where both parties can collaborate on a range of activities, from commercial and industrial exchanges and technology partnership, from educational and learning exchanges, to the sharing of policy and regulatory information.”
