News and Notes from BroadcastAsia2008 : 18 June 2008 New moves to help digital media firms go global unveiled at imbX opening MDA initiative aims to turn promising companies into industry leaders by pushing their innovative digital media services to markets abroad.
Asia’s largest infocomm and media business platform imbX – incorporating the BroadcastAsia2008 trade exhibition – kicked off at the Singapore Expo yesterday. Even as a record 50 companies at the Singapore Pavilion showcased groundbreaking technologies in Interactive Digital Media, IPTV and Mobile Broadcasting, new moves are afoot to help them go farther. The Media Development Authority of Singapore yesterday unveiled a fresh initiative to support local digital media firms which want to push their applications and services to markets abroad. The Call for Proposals for Digital Media Applications and Services Projects was announced by Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, at the opening of imbX. The aim is not only to turn promising media players into industry leaders but also to establish Singapore as a global hub for digital content, services and communities. Companies involved in high-growth areas like Immersive Learning Media, Pervasive Media, and Virtual and 3D Media, and whose applications and content have been developed with viable business models, can submit proposals. More details are on www.mda.gov.sg. BroadcastAsia2008, which runs till Friday, has gathered 760 companies from 46 countries under the theme: “Digital: The Journey Forward”. One of the highlights in this digital future is the Ultra High Definition TV System by NHK, on show for the first time in Asia outside Japan.
